Our objective was to demonstrate just how difficult it is to communicate as a deaf person. We wanted to do this by offering a short lesson in how best to be understood by someone reading their lips.
In a world first, we used facial recognition technology with the viewer’s webcam to see whether they were in front of their screen. There they would hear a voice saying “I can only understand you when you are directly in front of me.” If they move to one side, the voice fades and the lips become unreadable, much like a person moving their head making it impossible for a deaf person to lip-read.
